How is Brazilian waxing done?

Brazilian waxing is a type of female intimate hair removal which began in Brazil and disseminated throughout the world. Generally speaking, the purpose of the technique is to remove all hair from the genital area.

This means that the hair in the groin, perineum, buttocks and tailbone are completely removed. Yet, using the same technique, there are women who choose to leave some pubic area (triangular region below the belly) unshaven or with some specific shapes, such as a line, a triangle, or even a heart.

It is done with wax, hot or cold, and ensures speed in the process. In addition to prolonged results, a more delicate touch and hair that grows back finer after shaving. One of the main advantages is that wax ensures the complete removal of hair, starting from the root hair.

The birth of the Brazilian waxing technique

This hair removal method became popular worldwide thanks to seven sisters who were born in Espirito Santo, a state in the southeast of Brazil. They, who are now known as "J Sisters", started applying the technique in New York, USA, one summer in the late 1980s.

A little before this date, smaller and smaller bikinis were becoming increasingly popular and hair could inevitably be exposed. It was precisely for this reason that a type of hair removal emerged that would later be called "Brazilian waxing".

When she got home she noticed that she also had hair in the area and asked a depilator to remove it. The professional refused, but young Janea did not give up and decided to do it alone in front of a mirror. After a few attempts, the hair removal was done.

When the sisters set up a salon in New York and showed this type of hair removal, it did not take long for the fashion to spread.

Bikini Wax vs Brazilian Wax

While Brazilian waxing (also called "Hollywood waxing") removes all hair from the genital area, Bikini Wax removes only the hair that is visible when the woman wears the bikini bottom. In other words, the hair is not completely removed.

How long do Brazilian waxes last?

As we said, the durability of Brazilian wax is really very good. It usually lasts a long time, but the period can vary a lot according to the body of each person.

In most cases, the effect of a waxing usually lasts about 20 to 25 days. After that, the hair starts to appear again.

Does waxing make my hair grow thicker and darker?

No, none of the Brazilian waxes result in thicker or darker hair. In fact, the result is quite the opposite.

When a woman waxes regularly, she soon notices that hair starts to grow back in smaller quantity and finer than before.

What should be the length of my hair for depilation?

The ideal is to have the hair not too short at the time of depilation, because there is a risk of not reaching the expected results. So, it is not necessary to trim them before going to the waxing professional.

It is also important to point out that professionals do not recommend the use of razors between one depilation and another, to avoid interrupting the process and stimulating hair growth.

How often should I Brazilian wax?

As we said, Brazilian waxing can last from 20 to 25 days. However, the skin needs to recompose itself after waxing, since it removes the horny layer (stratum corneum), leaving it unprotected.

This whole process takes approximately 28 days. So you can wax every 30 days or as often as your professional recommends.

Does Brazilian waxing hurt?

Pain is something very relative, that is, the intensity depends a lot on each person. However, there is no denying that waxing can cause discomfort, since the area is extremely sensitive.

The good news is that the discomfort is usually greater only the first few times. And, as time goes by, the procedure gets less and less painful.

Tips for before your first waxing

If you have never waxed before, and don't have much experience with the technique, check out some tips to follow before you wax and have more success with the procedure:

  • Exfoliate the area to be waxed at least 3 days before the procedure to avoid ingrown hairs;
  • Make sure that the hair will not be too small and not too large on the day of the depilation;
  • Go with comfortable clothing, as the skin will be even more sensitive after depilating;
  • Take a warm shower before the procedure to open the pores and reduce the amount of micro-organisms in the area;
  • If necessary, take a painkiller before the process to feel less pain;
  • Finally, choose a qualified and reliable professional.

Can I Brazilian wax myself at home?
